Available Stair Angle/ Height Charts

The minimum/maximum height and angle restrictions for our closed riser stairs is not quite a simple as a set maximum. The range varies based on the stair width, and the type of tread. The two charts below provide that information. You may also contact our customer service department with your requested height and width and we will be able to provide you with the information you need.

To read the table, the heights and angles are available for all heights (in feet) below and to the right of the colored line that represents each tread width. For example, a 36" wide tread is available up to 12' high at approximately the 25 degree angle and steeper, but not at a 21 degree angle, which has a height limitation of just over 10' high. For specific heights/angles, please consult your customer service representative.

Tread Options

The diamond plate tread provides a solid tread surface with raised diamonds for a non-skid surface. We manufacture these treads in our facility and are able to accomodate custom width requests.

If your application requires concrete treads, you may select concrete pan treads manufactured here in our facility. We use the underside of diamond treadplate to create the pan, with the diamond plate wrapped around the front edge to create a diamond treadplate nosing. The pan treads are available in the same widths as our other treads, or you may choose a custom width. The pans are provided ready to install and ready for your site poured concrete..

The smooth plate tread is identical to the Diamond tread, except that it does not have the raised diamonds. This surface should not be used alone and is designed to allow you to adhere your own surface material directly to the stair (carpeting, non-slip flooring surface, or other flooring material). We manufacture these treads in our facility and are able to accommodate custom width requests.

Rail Options

Our stairs come with both guardrails and handrails designed within the parameters of the building codes and field conditions you need to meet. The guard rails are 42" and the handrails are between 30" and 38" depending on your code and preference. You may opt to have guard rails on both sides, or if you are mounting the stair against a wall, opt to have no guardrail. The top edge of the stringer is narrower if you do not have a guardrail. If you choose no guardrail, you can select a handrail that will attach to the wall using wall mount brackets. Or you may leave off the rails and provide your own wall mounted rails if you wish.

Stairs that must comply with ADA guidelines will have an extension.

The Industrial IBC stair is the only industrial stair that requires the inside handrail in addition to a guardrail. For this reason, we use suggest Model 03AA or Model 04AA when you must comply with IBC for industrial access stairs.

The balusters of the guardrail connect through the stringer of the stair, and bolt in place using provided spacers and bolts.

Handrail End Terminations

  • Top and bottom extensions on rail meet ADA requirements as outlined in ADA 4.9.4(2).
  • Handrail connects to the guard rail or the wall.
  • Baluster ends press punched.
  • Rails capable of withstanding a 200 pound load applied in any direction.
  • Rail and balusters constructed from 1-1/2" OD tube.
  • Balusters attach to stringers using provided bolts and spacers.

  • Your customer service representative will automatically assume that you want guardrails on both sides of the stair
  • If your stair is against a wall, you can choose to eliminate the guard rail. Stairs without guardrails have a narrower stringer so that it is not possible for users, especially children, to slide down the edge of the stringer.
  • Guardrails extend 42" above the nosing of the tread and end at the top and bottom of the stair.
  • Commercial stairs have balusters that are spaced so that a 4" sphere can not pass between two balusters.
  • Stairs ordered under the IBC Industrial Code have balusters spaced so that a 21" sphere can not pass between two balusters.
  • Guardrails are also available with a Filler Panel option.

Assembly Options

  • Unassembled...we recommend unassembled. The stair is very simple to assemble and install. This is the most economical option, saving both on shipping and on the stair purchase price. All assembly hardware is provided.
  • Fully Assembled ...the stair comes fully assembled and ready to install. This ships at a higher freight class with the freight carriers and is therefore much more expensive to ship.
  • Tread/Stringer Assembly ...we will attach the treads to the stringers for you and ship the rails ready to install. You simply add the rails into the stringers and bolt them in place before installing the stair. All assembly hardware is provided.
  • Rail/Stringer Assembly...we will attach the balusters and stair rail to the stringers for you and ship the treads separately. You add the treads to the stringer before installing. All assembly hardware is provided.
